I found the narrative a little harder to follow than other graphic novels I’ve read - lots of quick cuts to different scenes, and lots of characters with only brief scenes to keep track of. But, the art is beautiful, and I feel like I learned a really important piece of Canada’s history and culture.

Overall I really enjoyed this graphic novel and learning more about the first hand experiences of women in the oil field. I can relate to the feeling of having to put up with things to maintain a livelihood or rightfully bringing things to light only for nothing to change and/or to feel blame for it yourself. My one struggle was that the transition, or lack thereof, from scene to scene made it a bit hard to follow in parts or to feel a flow with things. (Read for Feminist Book Club)

This book just made me sad. It’s a smack across the head about what life is like for women but it’s… a moment in time with no resolution. It ends showing you how mistreatment can effect you for a long time after the moment has passed.

Incredible graphic memoir about a recent college grad's -- and aspiring cartoonist -- time working in the Alberta oil mining camps.

It has an interesting artistic style that moves the plot forward. And even though I usually just read one graphic novel per year, Ducks has inspired me to read more of the genre.

Trigger warning: content relating to rape and sexual harassment

Bonus point: One of Obama's favorite books of 2022.

Fun Fact: The book is called Ducks after in incident in 2008 when a couple hundred migrating ducks landed in Canadian oil sludge and died. In the grander scheme of ecological disasters, it wasn't horrible. But the ducks were photogenic, and it became front page news. People started speaking out against the oil companies. (From NPR)
