not my general vibe of book but it did get me interested in reading and learning more about Liberia's history. (and actually, had me reading some wikipedia pages in the midst of reading, something that i don't usually do!)

the book weaves between more fantastical and more realistic moments seamlessly and the realistic fantasy fits the narrative well. one of those books where you might be a little confused in the beginning and it takes some time to figure out the relationships between the main characters, although it doesn't quite weave together as solidly as my general book preference.

Beginning of the book was a bit confusing , but once I knew all the character - it was super beautiful. A mix of history about freedom fighters of Liberia and magical realism

This book got a little confusing because I was listening to it so I couldn’t go back as easily and clarify what was going on. This book was also very difficult because of the brutality of being a Black person in history. I really loved the magical realism and how the stories all wove in and out of each other ending where it began.

Another favorite novel of the dozens I’ve read so far in 2021. Lyrical language, interesting characters, a touch of historical knowledge, and a fair amount of straight-up action. Read if you like: Homegoing, classical myths, complicated superheroes, strong women, magical realism, historical novels, Africa.
