I know that this might be an unpopular opinion, but I absolutely love this book. For me, this book encompasses what a Star Wars adventure should be: fun, bizarre, and emotional at the right parts.  I can't really explain why I love this book, perhaps it's the nostalgia of when I jumped into this series after having read about 5 Star Wars books, having no idea of the reading order. I think the best way to frame it is that this book is not one of the 'best' books I have read (in fact, it has many flaws which have probably been pointed out by other reviewers), however it is one of my 'favourite' books.

If you want to know whether you should dive into the New Jedi Order or not, I think you absolutely should, but only after reading the other books and series' preceding it. There are many reading orders available online which will show you what books are essential for the full enjoyment of this series.

Star Wars didn’t really need a dark and gritty reboot. There’s plenty of other depressing and extremely violent options out there…

Also, no one except Timothy Zahn writes Mara Jade all that well, and from this point on it felt like the series didn’t really know what to do with her. A real disappointment, since she’s one of the best characters of the whole expanded universe.
