basically hunger games x ember in the ashes x maze runner.

definitely written for TikTok. the world was interesting but made little sense and there were too many powers and things going on. peak YA tropes, including major info dumping. the prose was actually quite readable though, but declined in the second half.

4.5

4.5/5 stars !

the author is amazing at writing fight scenes, and building up tension between the two main characters. GODDDDD its just so scrumptious i ate this book UP. i cannot wait to hear more about the elites and the lore behind kai’s father. i NEED it omg. its like im indulging myself into a universe i know im GOING to become obsessed with.

one thing that irked me tho was that, despite the writing being simultaneously gorgeous and easy to read, there were parts i noticed that were somewhat repetitive. a.k.a the repetition of certain adjectives in one chapter or two consecutive chapters. it didn’t bother me THAT much at first but at some point i did notice it.

anywho, the romance was one of a kind. listen i am not one for romance but the author single-handedly multiplied the chemistry between paedyn and kai despite there being no dialogue at all. i FELT the emotion through the narrative and that itself is a talent i must applaud.

the characters are all diverse in their own way and i hope we get to see more of them!!!! especially
blair (given the ending) and kitt (in his villain arc)
!!!!!!! i just need to see their development as the plot thickens.

overall, READ this book rn…….. it is so worth ur time i promise.

I really wanted to like this more than I did, I just didn't vibe with the book.

Paedyn and Kai's relationship did nothing for me personally. Their flirtations (to me) are extremely generic and cringey. Every time Kai flirts I feel a part of me die. There will be 1 page of world building and like 15 in a row of them play-flirting.

They aren't enemies, they're like those couples you know where they're always playfully-complaining about each other to other people. The extent of their enemies is "i'm gonna kill you!" but their relationship starts with her saving him?

I didn't particularly like how it was written. I feel like a lot of the characters are 2 dimensional. The attempts to make Kai layered didn't feel successful to me - what's the point of a mask if so many people are able to see it?
I really disliked all the villainous characters, The King, Blair and Ace were a miss, they could've been written more interesting. Blair being written as a bitch and nothing else felt slightly misogynistic.

I kinda wanted to see Paedyn struggle with lying to Kai, like imagining what he'd think of her once he'd find out she was an Ordinary, since his job is to kill Ordinaries.

I really really really wish it had better world building than it did. I don't feel as if I was pulled into their world. The Trials felt like a bit of a let down. I don't know if I missed it but
Adena's death seemed really senseless.

I do think there is potential here, and the ending does create new territory for the story to go, so I will probably continue.
