I bought this because I thought it was a poetry book. I was wrong. Anyway.

I really related to / understood the emotions of the character so it got some extra points. Other than that it's just okay.

Nicki Minaj once said: When you don't make moves and you don't climb up the ladder, everybody loves you because you're not competition.

That's how I see Lay Li. That friend you have that only likes you when you're not glowing and becoming your own sun. The one that humiliates you and laughs at you to make herself look cute and impress you. Essa too.

Sky deserved better than that. Sky learned to voice that she deserved better than that. Sky learned what a real friend was and how real friends are supposed to make you feel.

I love novels written in verse (especially those centered around coming-of-age and self discovery), so I was really eager to come across this debut by Mahogany L. Browne! That being said, I appreciated the overarching idea of this novel, but the execution fell kind of flat for me and I frequently found myself having to re-read verses to make sense of what was happening. It wasn't poorly written by any means, it just wasn't a writing style that I completely connected with. That being said, I definitely want to pick up more of this author's work in the future!

If you are looking for a novel in verse with diverse characters that highlights topics such as racism, sexism, and friendship this one is for you!

I definitely recommend the audiobook for this because it's read by the author and I always think poetry read by the author is the best way to consume it. This is a story about broken friendships and learning to stand up for yourself. The poetry is powerful and there are some gorgeous lines in this. However, at times the story jumps around a little too much. But overall, great for fans of Elizabeth Acevdeo for sure!

This was absolutely beautiful and moving poetry. The voice and style of writing was breathtaking and the audiobook was phenomenal--definitely recommend listening to it.

This is a story about a girl who lost her best friend and found herself--through boys, basketball, swimming, struggles, sisters, and finally self-acceptance. I absolutely loved this book, and am thrilled to read a book that focuses more on friendship than romantic relationships--all love is important!
