Not as action pack as the first ones, but a satisfying end to the trilogy. Perhaps a little too neatly tied up in a bow, but I'm okay with it. Finally, a trilogy that doesn't let me down.

A satisfying end to a strange series.

Although this book dragged a bit in the middle and it introduced even more characters into a world in which I still struggle to remember all of the characters, I ultimately enjoyed it.

Thankfully the three main characters, Waverley, Kieran and Seth, remained complicated and compelling enough to make this final book worth the read. I was very satisfied with the choices and sacrifices that these characters made during this final book and although the ending was a bit clean, I was still really happy with it.

This series has become one of my favorite series ever! I fell in love with the characters, and the action was compelling right to the end! This is a fabulous YA series appropriate for every gender, as it is narrated by multiple characters. The action is very exciting, and the plot did not fall short of the first two novels in the series. This is a definite must-read for YA lovers!

Loved it!

INITIAL THOUGHTS
To say I was looking forward to reading this one is a serious understatement! I wanted all my questions answering plus much much more . . . .did I get it?

MY REVIEW
I was super super lucky in that the Author arranged for me to receive a copy of this for me to read and then my daughter was sent one so, thankyou!
I love the cover! with its bright orange flame, the silhouetted figure running and of course the face showing through the flames. IT's wow!
So would the cover alone make me pick this one up from a bookshelf? Yes 100%!
So this book picks up from where Spark left off. The crew of the Empyrean have no choice but to go to the New Horizon when their vessel is destroyed! Or is it totally destroyed not everyone makes it off. . . are they dead or are they just hiding out from the mysterious crew from the New Horizon that seems to be checking out the things that still work on the Empyrean? Seth put Waverly on the last shuttle to leave the Empyrean with the promise that he would some how follow and help her.
What can the Empyrean Crew do? They are all being kept apart on the New Horizon by the Pastor Anne Mather who though still rules the New Horizon does now thanks to what happened to Waverly and the other girls have a few doubting her. There's also the Elders on the New Horizon who seem to want Anne Mather's out of power so they can replace her with one of their own called Jake. Jake seems to befriend Waverly but when she rejects his somewhat amorous advances he is not happy at all and Waverly finds her life in danger from more than one person. Danger seems to be around every corner for her. Though Waverly and some of the other children have been reunited with their parents things aren't right. It's as if those parents have been brain washed!
So Seth finds a way to get from the Empyrean to the New Horizon and literally goes into hiding. Seth learns by just listening at doors and wall what is going on and really runs as much interference as he can without being caught. There is so much going on in this book it really is amazing!
There are twists and turns aplenty, help for the Empyrean kids from unlikely sources. Then there's those people who you initially think are "good" that turn out truly cunning and bad!
I really enjoyed reading this book, yet at the same time I truly didn't want it to end.
I wanted more! and I'd like to think that maybe there could be a spin off series??
So did I enjoy the book? Truly loved it! Did I enjoy the series? Wow Yes loved it! Would I read more by Amy Kathleen Ryan? Yes please! I'd love more of Waverly, Seth, and the New Horizon and . . . . well I can't say what else or it would be a major spoiler! I'm sure Amy Kathleen Ryan will know what I mean? Please??

For me this series went downhill in every book. I think in part this is due to the fact that I LOVED the first book, so I had set my hopes quite high. In this final book, although I did like seeing the series to the end, I didn't enjoy it as much as I'd hoped. The plot was enticing enough and I was truly gripped by it. However, I felt that the different romantic and platonic relationships didn't really feel genuine. This was the book's main downfall I think, that the connections between characters didn't feel real.

Flame is an amazing (and satisfying) ending to this action-packed trilogy.

Everyone is aboard the New Horizon. Waverly and Kieran are in the clutches of Ann Mather. Waverly also finds herself in a tug of war with another political actor on board.

In the previous two books I felt tugged between who to support among the three protagonists. In Flame, it felt good supporting and rooting for all three of them. They acknowledged that their previous actions messed up their relationship with others and they all worked to improve themselves.

The whole series was descripted, creative, and an action-packed space opera that included philosophical and moral questions.

Flame was a lot slower paced than the other two, but I did feel like I was continuously pulled to keep reading and find out what would happen next.

The ending made my heart ache! But all in all, it made sense, and that’s what made the ending satisfying (and good to live with). It definitely reached a 5 rating because I felt good with the ending, which personally, is something so rare with books these days.

Also, this is a great crossover series. I’m sure it’ll appeal to both young adults and adult readers.

Flame by Amy Kathleen Ryan is the third book in the Sky Chasers trilogy along with Glow and Spark. In this final installment, Waverly, Seth and Kieran are now working separately to try to salvage the disastrous mission of the two ships making their way to New Earth. Their previous home, the Empyrean has been destroyed and they are now all crowded on to the New Horizon and hoping to repair the emotional damage done by the actions of both crews. Unfortunately, no one can be trusted.

This book reminded me why I don't like to get involved with a series until it has all been released. I read the first book, Glow, two-and-a-half years ago and the second book over a year ago. For me, that is just too large a gap between readings for me. I had forgotten many of the details, though the major plot points came back to me fairly quickly. I considered a quick re-read of the previous books, but I just didn't want to spend the time. In the end, it turned out not to be too much of an issue although I'm sure the story would have felt richer.

Overall, I really liked this series. These weren't the best books I've ever read, but they were exciting and provided an opening to an interesting debate about where power should lie, whether in the hands of government or in religion. It also allows the reader to imagine what would be necessary to begin an entirely new society and if in so doing the problems of the past would be resolved or if they would simply follow. A little science fiction, a little social commentary, these books make for good reading. I hope you'll give them a try.

I wish they would have made this one into an audio book, as that is how I "read" the other books, but alas it didn't happen. However, I thought it was a satisfying ending to an entertaining series.

Rated: 3.5

I won a copy of this book for an honest review. This will never effect how I like or rate a book.

Now you see, I was so eager when I got this book that I didn't care about anything else. I was just so grateful that I had actually won this one. After winning the previous two I had been looking forward to this one and had great anticipation to it. So now the question is; Did it live up to that anticipation I had for it?
Well honestly, I'm feeling conflicted. With these books I've always for the most part enjoyed the ride they've taken me on. That part has never changed even as this crazy story has continued along. That's right crazy. I doubt there are many that could read this series and say that they predicted what would come next. I mean how could you? That's certainly something this book has got going for it along with the other two. Sure somethings you might be able to guess might happen but overall there's no predictability in these books. They are so over the top and action packed that it's hard to take one thing in before another big thing happens. Now this is a good thing and also a bad thing, particularly in this book.
Since my biggest problem with this book is it couldn't help but feel rushed. Trilogies are a big thing at the moment but really this series could of went on longer. It certainly had plenty of stuff going on in it to do so. Yet everything is crammed air tight in this last book and a lot of things don't get better explained. We don't get the reward of seeing it after all we've been through on certain things. Instead we are rewarded with a few sentences or so.
There was also a focus on romance at the beginning and middle that didn't feel as balanced out as the previous books had it. Waverly was the worst offender of this. It in fact made her slightly irritating at times. She couldn't seem to get her thoughts in order over three guys for the longest time. Though I thought after the last book that this wouldn't be an issue. Oh how I was wrong. It wasn't enough that she was still thinking between the two, lets throw a third in there that everyone should know has no chance of really happening. I'll let that go though since once we get past that nonsense things get a lot better.
Kieran and Seth, I felt were the stronger characters. They've come a long way as well, particularly Seth. Seth has by far now become my favorite character out of all of this and he's earned it. I also like in this book how we got to spend time with some of the other boys. Not a whole lot because really there wasn't much time to spare for it but I did enjoy the detour to see what they were dealing with.
One big thing I'll praise these books for they give the characters a real reason to fight and a very real sense of danger. All the characters go through a lot and all of them come out very changed after everything they've been through. This series does not mess around in that department and I think that's what makes it so great. None of it is sugarcoated. It's like an adrenaline rush at times while at others truly disturbing. Lets put it this way I highly doubt I'll be finding other books that pushed some of the boundaries that these books did, especially for being a YA series.
I'm near the end of this review now and I'm still not sure how I feel about that final ending. It felt too soon but at the same time if it had to end then this probably was the best ending that I could see for it to have. For the most part everything got tied up with a bow and it does feel like you're allowed to easily breathe again after all that these books put you through. I enjoyed my experience through all its ups and downs and terrifying moments, and now this is my reward. So I suppose it's a good enough one. The author should congratulate herself. The series left me wanting more but if this is how it must end then she this was a good end for it. What I've said in past reviews hasn't changed I'll still be looking forward to see what this author publishes after this.
I recommend this trilogy to fans of YA and Science Fiction.
Now I feel I must leave off on this small spoiler that I still can't get my mind around. Five kids! Dang Kieran! You guys must be breeding like bunnies over there. ;)
