This book represents Steinbeck's attempt to chronicle the people and places he encountered living in California's Central Coast during The Depression; a world he knew was vanishing as he wrote this book. The plot is fairly simple - a gang of local bums tries to throw their good friend and part-time benefactor, Doc, a party. However, The Gang's poverty and their own flaws make this a daunting task.
Graphic: Racial slurs and Classism
Moderate: Racism
The book is a product of its time, and there are a few racial slurs and slight anti-Asian racism.maddiebusick's review against another edition
