A short novel that had a big impact...Wandering Souls explores history I had never learned about. There are so many challenging circumstances the characters face and yet there was an undercurrent of hope. The way the author plumbs the depths of grief was both beautiful and inventive. I was completely impressed.

Absolutely devastating, absolutely beautiful.

3.5* An interesting exploration of forced migration and the cultural trauma of diaspora, but undermined I thought by one of the narrative voices - an oddly jarring fantasy/magic-realism element that didn't gel with the rest of the narrative(s).

this did not hit the spot for me. while it wasn't awful, it wasn't amazing either. it didn't blow me away with anything. i was pulled in during some parts but mostly, i think the narration and pacing hindered my total engagement with the novel. what could've been a good story was bogged down by its lackluster narration so that the emotional impact and its thematic cohesion were affected, too. i personally did not like the POV of their ghost brother because i do not see its relevance and contribution to the narrative overall. so yes, it's an ok book but nothing brilliant.
