Not sure about this one. I admit I'm not a classicist, but I do have an art history degree and a long standing interest in mystery cults. I've also had productive experiences with other classicist's essays like Ann Carson's Gender of Sound, so i was initially optimistic. I appreciate the illustrations and source material included in the book, but I don't think the argument itself was very fleshed out at all. There seemed to be large absences and unexplained connection  between thoughts - might work as poetry, but far less so as an essay.

The inclusion of source material as a second half, as always, gives the single volume recursive-reading power, and the breaking-up by images is rather nice. To the uninformed (me), the argument, while persuasive, is not particularly backed up by the sources.

I don't understand what I just read, but it had some nice pictures.
