Very good story, but I'm not quite sure to approve the moral of the story, so I don't identify with the characters and in my opinion the style is too superficial.

The Legacy is the story of two sisters, Erica and Beth, who are making a return to their grandmother's English manor house which is haunted by childhood memories of the disappearance of their (bratty) cousin, Henry. Storton Manor is filled with the ghosts of their childhood memories both good and bad which the sisters must face as they make the difficult decision about whether they will stay and live in the sprawling mansion or sell. During the time they spend there, an old friend shows up, and events long past are revisited with suprising outcomes. Interwoven with Erica and Beth's story is the story of their great-grandmother, Caroline, a child of privilege living in New York City who marries for love and moves to Oklahoma Territory in 1902 to be with her husband on his ranch. Times are hard on the Oklahoma frontier, and Caroline soon begins to wonder if love is enough to sustain her.
Webb laces the two very different stories together so skillfully that they seem to truly belong together, and though it's not a fast-moving book by any means, it's filled with the suspense of wondering how the two stories must intersect. The characters are very well fleshed out so that even when they do loathsome things, you can understand why. A part of me wanted to loathe Caroline, she's not a particularly lovable character, but Webb draws out her isolation and her struggles against it so well that you can nearly understand when the suffering she perceives drives her to do unforgivable things and how her legacy impacts her family down through several generations. The book was a slow read for me but was made the better for it because it's so richly atmospheric that you want to spend more time in the dusty halls of Storton Manor and Caroline and Corin's Oklahoma ranch. Webb's dual storyline makes for an addictive and satisfying read that I heartily recommend.

I didn't know what to expect as I had been given this, and hadn't chosen it myself. I really enjoyed the mystery and suspense; it kept me gripped and wanting to know more.

This book started out really slow - I think it's one of those books that will be enjoyed more if you can read large chunks of it in one sitting. I found the story in the past much more interesting than the present day one, which dragged a bit. None of the female characters were particularly likable, those I suppose that may have been intentional.

Jumping between the present and past, usually into previous generations, is clearly in vogue. I haven't minded this for the most part, but for me it's begun to feel formulaic. With this book and the last one I read, one generation kept me reading in spite of how unengaged I was with the other. In this book I simply wasn't interested in the characters in the present. As much as I tried to care about what mystery was behind Beth's mental state and what happened to Henry, it wasn't until I'd reached the second half of the book that I actually wanted to fast-forward from the early 1900s to read their stories.
I thought that the author did an excellent job in establishing time and place, and the leap from early frontier life in America to the gentrified country estate in present day England felt real. I could almost feel the dry wind and layers of sand on my skin but also the bitter damp of winter in England.
I enjoyed this book overall and would recommend it. I just wish I could have cared as much about the characters in the present as I did their predecessors.

I like how there are two mysteries in this book. One in the present and one in the past. It is a fast read. It is a nice and a bit sad story.

Удивительная книга, удивительная история. Мне очень понравилось то, что автор чередовала настоящее с прошлым, повествуя сначала от лица Эрики, одной из сестер, и потом от лица их прабабушки Кэролайн. Как раз таки больше всего мне нравилось читать именно главы от лица Кэролайн, главы из прошлого. Начало ее истории было прекрасным... Бал, танец, первая любовь, свадьба, как все было восхитительно! Но читателю естественно не дают надежды на сказку и почти сразу сообщают о том, что у этой любви печальный конец. Корин... эх... Я была очарована им сразу же, с его первого появления. Как же он любил Кэролайн, он ведь и вправду хотел сделать ее счастливой, делал для нее все, чего она захочет, он по настоящему любил ее, а Кэролайн иногда этого не видела и не понимала. Вот это печально. Хотя нельзя не согласится с тем, что на ранчо она была все таки несчастна. Как ни крути, а девушка выросла в другом обществе, и врядли бы прижилась на ранчо. Чего мне немного не хватило, так это писем. Боже, я обожаю читать письма. Мне нужно больше писем. По моему, они больше всего раскрывают личность героя, открывают их мысли и чувства. Кажется, мне стоит просто почитать какой нибудь роман в письмах...
Перейдем, пожалуй, к сестрам Бэт и Эрике. Вот честно, насчет Бэт я ничего не могу сказать, вот абсолютно ничего. Для меня этот персонаж вообще не раскрылся. Ну а вот с Эрикой все понятно.Девушка, которой все любопытно, скажем так. Для меня в этой книге не было явного героя, которому я симпотизировала. Ко всем у меня было довольно таки нейтральное отношение. Единственное, чего я не поняла в этом рассказе, это поворот с Эрикой и Динни в конце. ЧТО ЭТО БЫЛО ВООБЩЕ? АВТОР, ЗАЧЕМ ТЫ ЭТО СДЕЛАЛА? Вот я этот момент вообще не поняла. Ну ладно, Эрика, с ней все понятно, как никак влюблена в него, ничего не поделаешь, но, вот блин, почему так поступил Динни? А еще о каких то чувствах между Бэт и Динни заливали... В общем, для меня это был единственный минус, а так, в целом, история хороша, легко читается, что крайне важно для меня, и конечно же захватывает сюжетом, хотя непредсказуемых элементов здесь не так уж и много, обо всем можно догадаться заранее.

Кое-какие детали навсегда останутся в прошлом — потому-то оно так манит нас своими тайнами. В наши дни едва ли кто-то сможет вот так уйти в небытие — слишком уж подробно сейчас все фиксируется, любая информация заносится в память компьютера. Куда меньше шансов сделать потрясающее открытие. Оставить что-то в тайне сейчас почти невозможно, и все же такое тоже случается.
