Boring (I didn't find it interesting until the last 30 pages) and it wasn't scary. Although I didn't find the American version of The Ring scary either, so I'll have to watch the Japanese version.

My three stars are for the general story behind the videotape creation, and the way the videotape clues came to light. There was a lot of misogyny in this book and I'm not sure if it was due to being in the early 90's or if it's just how our author decided to write the story.
Asakawa (our main character) is a terrible husband and father, and a generally unlikeable protagonist. He is long time friends with self proclaimed rapist Ryuji. I almost quit reading when we first learn about Ryuji because it adds nothing to the story. Once Sadako takes her revenge, we find that Ryuji may have been all talk? This barely saves the story, but doesn't excuse all of the misogynistic behavior through the book.
This is the one time I would recommend the original movie Ringu over the book. They cleaned up a lot with that retelling.

I find it very difficult to review this book. I’ll keep it simple. The bare bones of the story are good - and I feel if written in another era by another author this could have been a fantastic horror. However, there’s an underdone of prejudice and running through the book that I just couldn’t shake and it ruined it for me. I’m not interested in reading the sequels for this reason.
