I do enjoy stories told from another perspective! This did not disappoint.

This story is, for the record, great. I just couldn't bring myself to finish because I want all the characters to be happy and the ending is just goingnto be pure pain

I didn't enjoy the writing in this book. The similes and prose were repetitive. There was so much time spent giving excess descriptions that it stalled the pace of the storytelling.

Two points really annoyed me is that Anastasia's imprisonment in the tower in never fully explained. Why was she put up there? How long was she up there? Secondly, the main two characters lack of comprehension of their lateness at the end was infuriating. Throughout the book Drizella is painted to be fairly intelligent or at least a quick learner, but she somehow couldn't comprehend that "we leave at 7 o'clock" actually means 7 o'clock?

2.5 rounded up to a 3.

I feel like there was a lot of potential in this book but it just fell really flat.

Also it's (a day away from) 2024, if you're going to write about corsets at least look them up and understand that they were NOT torture devices for women. I'm so tired of this trope and making them out to be this evil thing when they weren't. If your corset is too tight and you can't breathe, you're tying it wrong.

*more like 3.5* I had a different expectation going into this so that probably factors into my review, but I had the vibe that this would be more of a retelling than like a prequel/backstory. It was a quick read and the pacing didn't drag so it was easy to keep up with. There's not much more for me to really say about it than that. It was what it was. I didn't hate it, I didn't love it, but I probably won't reread it.

Honestly this book was better than I expected in the sense that it really got into the psychology of being emotionally abused by a woman like Lady Tremaine. It does a good job of having you root for the two sisters while at the same time setting up the stage for who they will inevitably become. I’ll admit the premise confused me at first timeline wise because I thought the debut was the ball they attended in the movie. Turns out it wasn’t.

Additionally I wish we’d seen more of lady Tremaine’s psychological warfare pitting the two against each other. Other than that - I loved this book.

very cute! a great origin story!
