This book isn’t bad, it just feelings like it’s missing something. Weird dream sequences that don’t feel like they add to the plot and flash backs that are unneeded. The characters are okay but the escalation of the problem seems overall weird. And it has a twist that I found very meh. The idea was there the execution just didn’t feel like it carried it.

The cover and the blurb is what originally caught my attention. It quickly reminded me of the game Firewatch where you play as a park ranger during wildfire season and his only companion is his coworker on the Walkie Talkie.

Other than the video game, I found the characters to not be likable. The only character I did like was Poppy. She is a hermit who lives in the park and ends up helping out our main character.

A near future where humans have been abandoning the earth for other planets as nature has withdrawn. The final known grizzly bear saunters on, its ribs showing through its coat. One ranger tracks it, monitors it. Until poachers arrive in the valley, keen to take a little bit of natural history with them when they depart earth.

This would make a great movie - the story is decent, if predictable. The setting is deeply alluring. The set up is good.

But the characters are poorly developed and, really, how many descriptions of the woods can one man take? Not this many, anyway.

I keep thinking about this book. I find the story and concept unendingly interesting. The characters and their dynamics within eachother are really compelling to me and the sentiment behind this story really scratches an itch of my own. The writing could be more fantastic and the villains I sometimes wish were a little more complicated - more truly horrifying in what they represent not just who they are.
But it's a great book, and I hope more people get the chance to read it.

The excellent and compelling portrait of a dysfunctional family and its members. It's a multilayered story that deals with serious issue like mental health but there's also some lighter and funnier moment.
The author is a good storyteller and liked how the different POVs were dealt, always adding a layer to the story.
It's strongly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine

This is a really lovely, thoughtful, moody philosophy piece that falls apart whenever it tries to be a grim action movie, which becomes unfortunately frequent as you move through the book.
