Silencing the Siren by J.E. Taylor is book one in her The Paradox Files series. In this book we are introduce to Kylee a Siren who works for Fate as a bounty hunter gathering up rogue creatures who threaten the world around them. Kylee used to be a resident of Hell before she escaped and came to the human world but she didn't escape alone. Her brother came with her and she made him swear a pact that he would lay low and not use his powers to ensnare or hurt any humans. For whatever the reason he has broken that promise and now Fate has demanded that Kylee find him and finish him off before he causes any more destruction. Klyee is reluctant to take on this task because well...he's her brother. But does she really have a choice? Either she does this or she will be returned to Hell and that is one thing that she would rather avoid at all costs if she can. But Fate will not be dissuaded from her mandate...and to drive the point home she shows Kylee what he's done. What Kylee doesn't expect is an unforeseen complication from her neighbor Alex who has a strong interest in her. He decides to go along with her on this putting the both of them in danger with his not fully thought out act of chivalry. Now arises the question...will they be able to make it out of this alive and will Kylee be able to fulfill her mission or will she fail?
Silencing the Siren is the first book that I've read by J.E. Taylor and I have to say that I really enjoyed it. The book mixes together mythology with fantasy, danger and a lot of heat. I was immediately engaged into the story right from the beginning and I honestly couldn't get enough. Kylee is a fascinating character but I'm a bit disappointed in her for hesitating as much as she does. She knows the dangers and the consequences of not acting swiftly and decisively. I like that she gets a taste of what has been happening to her brother through a touch of his memories but it should have driven her even more to do what she already knew was necessary to do.
This book is very well written with no noticeable errors to detract from the enjoyment of the story. I love a couple of the twists that are thrown at us. I can honestly say that I am very much looking forward to the next book in this series. I give it two thumbs up and 5 out of 5 stars. I received a copy of this book in exchange for a review.
