I liked the characters and most of the plot points of this book, but what brough the rating down was a decision that the main character made that had me literally pausing the audiobook to yell at him.
He lied about his dad being dead.  If that weren't bad enough, when he finally came clean (to a character whose father was actually dead), he tried to mitigate his mistake by saying "My dad is dead to me."
There are some things that just should not be lied about, even if it's just a plot point, and I feel that that is one of them.

I did really like the representation, though.  I liked the story of a pansexual trans main character living stealth and running for class president with all of the training of a politician's son.  I liked the other LGBTQIA+ characters from a mix of cultures and backgrounds.  I especially appreciated the Jewish representation.  A lot of Jewish representation in popular media is Hanukkah, or maybe Passover.  It was amazing to see a Shabbat dinner and a teen side character who keeps the rules of kashrut.  It was the sort of representation I wish I had when I was younger.

This book is good. It speaks with poise and feeling about the issues that LGBTQ+ people face in society. I’ve been reading quite a few books in a similar vein recently.

But 1 thing I can’t get over is the privilege the MC’s always have. Yes, I recognize that they are lack many privileges due to social prejudices. But I can’t ignore the fact that they also possess many. Either they’re white, or rich or media famous and they always, always have 1 safe place to turn to. Where are the books about the numerous LGBTQ+ individuals who are PoC, who struggle to pay the bills and who have no one to turn to?

I've seen so many authors deal with deadnaming in such a respectful way, but Sanchez chooses to have a character continually deadname. I want to think the author had a reason for doing so, but it was horrible to read. Deadnaming and bullying aside, the pink cover lets you know all you need to know about this otherwise rosy novel.
