i enjoyed listening to elliot tell his own story, but the non-chronological timelines of the book made it a bit difficult to keep track of what happened when. it was also a bleaker read than i anticipated, but that proves that elliot is a strong person who’s overcome many hardships. i’m so glad he is able to finally accept himself and feel safe enough to be freely queer in the world <3

In this incredibly thoughtful and well-written memoir, Elliot Page deliberately meditates and threads together a narrative of pain and the most intense self-discovery. It was a good memoir, a beautifully crafted book, but extremely difficult to read. Page has rendered his agony and self-loathing so well that it’s difficult to sit with and parse with him as he cycles through nonchronological threads, looping over and over through small moments in time to piece together meaning. It is well crafted, a quilt in twenty nine shades of blues, but it is wave after wave of agony and sadness, and moments that linger on joy or relief or self discovery have less focus and the same breath of life that Page can write into his moments of darkness and loss. All this to say: I’m beyond grateful this narrative exists. It is going to save someone’s life. But I advise exercising care when reading.

This was an interesting but sometimes difficult read. It was hard to read about people treating Page awfully both at home and at work but it was reassuring to see how much he always enjoyed acting. Whip It is one of my favourite movies and I've always really liked Juno so I enjoyed reading about what it was like behind scenes. I would have like more stories from the sets but it's quite a short book and I realise that wasn't really the focus of the memoir. I do wonder I would have found the book more impactful had it been told in a linear way, as I was often a little confused about where we were in his life. However it was clear that writing the book was part of his healing process so I'm really glad he was able to do it.

Elliot tells his story in an unchronological order, it makes it hard to follow.
Make sure you read the TW if you need any, this book contains many of them.
