I expected to enjoy reading about this more than it was actually the case. I picked it as the gender topic is not that widely discussed in manga, but it ended up being a bit disappointing to me. I am not sure if I am interested in also checking out the second book.

😍 The good:
Some of the messages were positive and powerful. There were some discussions about cultural differences and the author's self-discovery journey, besides other subjective talks or informational materials.

😅 The not-so-good:
The chapter structure was a bit clunky and all over the place, with a weird pace: we kept jumping from one thing to another and some of them seemed to not fit that well in the book. I thought that the manga will be more objectively informative but it leaned towards the memoir side, which would be fine but the style was not my cup of tea. There were plenty of stereotypes that the story mentioned, that seemed to be included without a deeper purpose.

This was a combination of memoir and educational bits. They discuss sexuality and gender in Japanese culture as well as other topics like menstruation and gender dysphoria, while also yelling their story of romance, friendships, and coming to their own. It was interesting and I liked seeing some of the development that the author goes through when it comes to the importance of finding a partner.

I did find the memoir component stronger than the educational component. I think the setup of some previously serialized manga memoirs is disjointed to me, which is more of a personal preference (for instance I recall feeling the same way about My Solo Exchange Diary, though I really love some other volumes in that series).

There were some interesting parts about Japanese queer culture, but I had a hard time getting into the material as subjects/time periods bounced around a bit. Also became off topic at some points.

A good informative autobiography about an 'X-gender' person living in Japan. The author talks a lot about 'taboo topics' and it's interesting to get their perspective. It is amazing for ppl who know little to nothing about everything LGBTQ, but also for ppl who know a lot about non binary experiences.

They explain very well what they feel and how identifying can work.

TW: period talk, but very explicit

I liked seeing how gender is discussed and how queer people connect in Japan. Miyazaki’s feelings and exploration were very relatable. I was thrown off by The Little Mermaid interlude, and I really dislike when graphic novels have lots of text the margins.
