While I’m not really a ghost story girlie (so this book wasn’t really in my genre of choice) I think there’s a lot to be admired here. Being set in my neighborhood was disarming, and I was curious to see how she would treat the space from a different racial perspective. Brashears has a distinct voice and a rich figurative description arsenal, which was a trip. Truly. The further you get into the story, the stranger and darker it grows, and by the last case, the energy is so dark and handled so well with the larger theme of institutionalized racism that I thought it was over for Magnolia. I’m glad she finds her way forward in the end. She is not without ghosts, but I think by the end she finds herself more empowered to journey with them.

Even though I enjoyed reading this novel, there were parts of the story that made me cringe. Still, its  an interesting and thought-provoking novel.
