A well told true story of a family being raised in a FDS polygamist community in Mexico and how the children escaped.

Wow. I cannot believe what this girl/woman went through. I have never been so enraged in my life.

Tough to read about the author going through such hardship. But fascinating too. What perseverance! I found myself so angry with the adults that I spent a good portion of the book with my eyebrows furrowed, jaw clenched, with occasional outbursts about their inability to see how their choices were have such a negative impact on their children.

The riveting true story of a young girl living in a polygamist colony in Mexico. Ruthie begins the story as a 5 year old living in a shack in Mexico with her mother and brothers. As the years go by the family grows and they move back and forth between Mexico to the US, sometimes running away from her abusive step-father, sometimes moving back to be reunited with him. A fascinating look at the life and tragedy of a polygamist second wife and her 10 children.

It is so sad to me what some children are put through at the hands of their parents yet they can be so resilient. What Ruth and her siblings experienced is heartbreaking. I'm so glad she was able to get herself and her siblings out of that life.

Absolutely the most insane memoir I’ve read - I kept having to remind myself that it was real. Heartbreaking but I recommend this book to everyone I know.
