I really enjoyed this book and can see why there were comparisons of it to Gone with the Wind. Much like GWTW, Roses' main character was a strong female who was devoted to the land she owned and through her own hard-headedness ended up losing the love of her life. Roses tells the same story from several different points of view and jumps back and forth in time, but does so in a way that isn't confusing. It starts at the beginning of the 20th century and encompasses World War I and II, the Great Depression, and the Korean War, but still makes the story itself the focus instead of these events. I like that Meacham didn't hesitate to kill people off in the story, even beloved characters. There were times when devotion of the main character, Mary, to her family's plantation was a little farfetched, as was the likeness between Mary and her great-niece, Rachel. And Rachel and Matt's love was also a bit implausible since they hardly knew each other; the idea that their relationship mimicked Mary's and Percy's just didn't hold enough weight with me. But overall I enjoyed the book and the story. I give it an A-.

Somewhat embarrassed that I enjoyed this as much as I did. In so many ways it is not much more than a silly soap opera, but then again, wasn't Gone with the Wind?

This was a fun summer read. Nothing too challenging, just a good soapy story that spans several generations. There are plenty of secrets and their consequences, and a strong female protagonist. I have seen some reviews complaining that this book is not as good as "Gone With the Wind" but I didn't expect it to be.

LOVED THIS BOOK! My heart broke a hundred times for Mary and Percy, Rachel and Matt, and Lucy and Wyatt. I was almost in tears after reading Percy's story. Such a well written, well thought-out, enticing and addicting novel. Drop everything you're reading and pick this book up.

Frustrating one dimensional characters/really bad Gone With the Wind want-to-be/repetitive dialogue/book could have been edited and sold as a Harlequin romance. Got through half of it before I threw in the towel. Don't waste your time getting that far.

Don't read this if you are put off by soap operaish tales. It was a good story but if you think soap operas are unbelievable you will find yourself irritated by things the characters in this book do. They'll have you saying "Why the heck did you/would you do that?" It did get a little long. I listened to it on audiobook and I found it an enjoyable story.

I tried to read this book because I love historical fiction. Maybe I'm being picky. However, I found the story line rather dull but a tad interesting. The characters didn't hook me either. I feel bad that I couldn't push through the book but it was just too dry and dull for my personal tastes.
