picked this up because we read “you, disappearing” in my short story class and I loved it so much I immediately reread it. unfortunately, it’s the best story of the collection by far

Despite liking how she writes, this was very hit or miss, and the hits weren't big ones.

I wanted to like this. The first story, Fairy Tale, reeled me in but many of the others were too abstract for me. The writing was a bit ornate and aloof at times, and this was unsatisfying to me because i felt like it was trying to make up for the lack of content in the stories. Well - maybe that’s not fair - there was a lot of content, I just wasn’t engaged enough to decipher what it meant. My experience of this book was sort of detached.

A Brief History of the Weather, Lobster Dinner, Hylomorphosis, and Rabbit Starvation were slogs. Besides Fairy Tale, my favorites were Choking Victim and the Dancing Master.
