Is it too early to call this book a modern classic yet? Most of the books I read during the YA dystopian boom of the early-to-mid-2010s have not aged well at all, but I enjoyed this book so much that I can’t believe I’ve gone this long without reading it. Suzanne Collins provides a masterclass in dystopian worldbuilding as she creates a society that is so clearly awful yet so close to the world we live in. There is so much potential and I feel Collins has only touched the surface so I look forward to exploring more of Panem in the other books.

I tend to find the protagonists of these kinds of books annoying and Mary-Sue esque but I was really surprised by how much I liked Katniss. Her limitations, the way she narrates her thoughts, and the way she interacts with other people seem so realistic and three-dimensional. It may have helped that I was listening to the audiobook narrated by Tatiana Maslany, whose voice acting throughout is absolutely fantastic and brought every character, and especially Katniss, to life.

Plus, I’m a sucker for the fake relationship trope and it’s so well-written here.

I can see why these books are so popular and I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the trilogy.

Gosh this book held up well since the last time I read it in high school 🙌 just as difficult to put down and I had honestly forgotten just how much I like the books. So much of the first one is lost in not being able to hear Katniss' thoughts. <Spoiler>And I'm still salty about the mutts in the end of the movie not being the dead tributes because come on. That's so freaking savage. I'm still very much Team Peeta all these years later too 😂 I get the love for Gale and the comfortability with Gale, and I get the confusion with Peeta because so much of her feelings are wound up in gameplay, but he's the boy with the bread!! He loves her so much, and he'd be good for her once she chills and has time to sort out her feelings. But we all know she doesn't get that so lol

This is my first time picking up The Hunger Games after growing up watching and re-watching the movies for years and all I can say is “why didn’t I pick this up sooner?!” The book is a lot more intense and detailed than the movie, which is some thing I appreciate and am grateful to be able to read and truly dissect for the first time now that I’m older. I was in between reading my paperback and listening to the audiobook or doing both at the same time to enhance my reading experience. I can’t wait to reread this once I’m done with the trilogy so I can annotate the hell out of my copy because I was itching to if it weren’t for me having an old copy of the book😅 After it being such an amazing read, there’s no doubt in my mind that the next two books will only get better and this is a new book I won’t stop recommending!

This was a reread for me, and I definitely feel like I appreciated The Hunger Games more now than I did when I read it in middle school. I am so in awe of this book in all its brutality. In the characters and their slow corruption, in the rebellion they ignite, in the world they live in. It was much more violent and poignant than I remember, and it’s a story that still haunts me even years after I read it.

Great book, been re-reading it almost every year for the past 10 years. Recommend it for older teens (14+) and young adults.
