Katniss tried to drown a kitten in the first few chapters when she was explaining stuff in the past. Buttercup is still alive. But I really hate when it comes to injuring innocent animals. I understand her logic, but... Still...Graphic: Death, Gore, and Injury/injury detail

The bet scene for me was that moment with Rue. It was the only moment that I truly felt moved in the book. I liked Peeta and Haymitch.
But honestly I felt I spent most of the book either going Katniss, no! or Katniss, why?!! I didn't dislike the character completely, and I get the confusion of emotions, but sometimes I completely understood the frustration Haymitch felt dealing with her.
By far though, my favorite character is Cinna. I really just love that Stylist. I will be continuing the series for the readathon of the books, look forward to my review of Catching Fire in April!

There were some plot-conveniences and the present-tense writing style was not really my cup of tea but it's not a big deal. Overall, a pretty solid read.

1. I was SHOCKED to see that the writing in this book held up over the years. I recently re-read a couple of the Twilight books and, wow, I can't believe people ever compared the two in terms of writing.
2. The characters are likable flawed. I love that Collins didn't try to make you like the characters. They all have their flaws and characteristics that are unlikable. I think this adds to the realism of the story.
3. An easy read for most. Another thing I love about this book (and the series as a whole) is how short the books are. The story is just long enough to get invested in the characters/plot without having to slog through paragraphs of non-consequential inner dialogue.
Overall, if you're looking for a quick read - this is a great choice!

Oh my god! This story was compelling, I couldn't stop reading it. There was something intense and appealing about a game and fake dating. These two combined were a treat. I liked that Katniss was badass and Peeta was the softie between the two. The game itself was cruel as fuck, horrible! And Rue, oh god, her death broke me. I watched the movies years ago but reading it felt different, the emotions I had for the story heightened. The themes were serious but executed great. Wow, Suzanne, now I need the rest of the series. Thanks to you, the audiobook narrator, the story flew across the pages.❤️Graphic: Suicidal thoughts, Torture, Medical content, Murder, Physical abuse, Blood, Confinement, Death, Emotional abuse, Injury/injury detail, and Violence
