There were some plot-conveniences and the present-tense writing style was not really my cup of tea but it's not a big deal. Overall, a pretty solid read.

Minor: Cannibalism and Vomit

I watched the movies first and so I was kind of comparing the book to that and it’s remarkable how similar it is really, but the last cornucopia scene really bothered me. In the movies, it was merciful and rebellious to kill Cato quickly, but that didn’t happen in the book and I think it speaks to how young they really are in the book and how Katniss really didn’t know what she was doing. I wish they addressed how that move read in the districts. Also, I like that the games were more geographically interesting in the book with the temperature differences and the dried stream. Much more realistic. I think the way they portrayed fox face in the movies changed her character and her motives. In the book, it was a completely accidental death and there was no evidence that she had knowledge of foraging.

My only issue with the book is how it ended. I don’t hate the ending but I’m just not the biggest fan.
Still a great book overall!

I tend to find the protagonists of these kinds of books annoying and Mary-Sue esque but I was really surprised by how much I liked Katniss. Her limitations, the way she narrates her thoughts, and the way she interacts with other people seem so realistic and three-dimensional. It may have helped that I was listening to the audiobook narrated by Tatiana Maslany, whose voice acting throughout is absolutely fantastic and brought every character, and especially Katniss, to life.
Plus, I’m a sucker for the fake relationship trope and it’s so well-written here.
I can see why these books are so popular and I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the trilogy.
