For most of this book I was sure I read this story before in a Buffy book from the 90s. Granted, the Buffy book was worse but their American smalltown was at least more believable. I could only believe The Doctor's and Martha's conversations, everything else was so stilted. It was fun enough but not a must read.

I was hoping that this book would be better than the last Doctor Who novel I read which was only okay. But it wasn't. This book dragged on and on and after a while I didn't really want to read it anymore because I became so bored with it. Even though the Doctor's in it there isn't really that much of him which is a shame 'cause he seems to be the best part about the book in my opinion. He has some witty moments here and there but at the end they make him really serious and not very enjoyable to the reader.

One thing that annoyed me deeply was the dialogue that the other characters had. The Doctor and Martha were fine, but every other character was speaking like a British author trying to figure out who Americans talk and it suffers greatly. It takes away the accuracy of the plot (which was equally boring).

All in all, I didn't *hate* this book but it was hard to get through after all the disappointment that I got from reading it. If you're looking for a not-very-well-written "fanfiction piece" about the Doctor and Martha this book is for you. If you have higher expectations like you would having watched episodes of Doctor Who (like I did) then you'll be disappointed.

I've listened to this one before, and read the complete ebook, and I still like it. (And I can't help think that it'd make a great Supernatural crossover.)

The aliens in this book, the Hervoken, were a bit of a joke. They were like tall thin trees with Pumpkins for heads. The whole book was obviously set up to have a Halloween-y feel to it, but the aliens did not need to fit in so well with that theme, if would have been just as good if they did not look like pumpkins. The green fog that covered the town also did little to add to the ‘fear-factor,’ especially as it seemed to become thicker or thinner depending on whether the characters needed to see something coming or not. It also makes you wonder why the Halloween celebrations were still going ahead if the fog was so thick that you can barely see anything.
I also don’t understand how the tree/spaceship managed to leave at the end without ripping up the whole town like the Doctor said it would if it took off on its own.
What I did find it interesting was the way that they linked this story with the episode The Shakespearean Code because the Hervoken were at war with the Carionites before they got stuck on earth.
This book was an okay read although I would not read it again in a hurry.

Good stuff. Martha's good and the descriptions of the bad guys make it very easy to visualize them.
