Shout out to the author for the wonderful descriptive language and the atmospheric settings this is one of the most vivid books I’ve read in a while where I felt transported. I will say this does take its time getting to the point of things and I was fairly iffy on it up until those last few paragraphs, and all I can say is YAAAASSS good I’m delightfully and evilly pleased. Just want to clap my hands in glee! This book is complicated to describe as there are many facets of it, but I do think that if you have the patience and can be drawn in by beautiful writing and cyclical storytelling you will be pleasantly surprised.

Some nice pieces of writing but it was just ... dull. An narrative told a thousand times before & nothing that stood out especially for me in the way Owens approached it.

(And some parts were so cringe, even ‘nice’ writing couldn’t save them.)

I read this book in four hours. I sat down with it, intending to read for an hour or so, and couldn’t put it down until I was done. I had heard good things about this book but it was better, and different, than I expected. I had some preconceived notions, based on the book jacket, and was prepared to be annoyed at common tropes that I’m not a fan of (violence against women being the main one). I was pleasantly surprised that Owens went a different direction that I appreciated. This is the best fiction book I’ve read in years and the first book I’ve read in one day since I was a teenager.
