Mixed feelings this one. For the first part I was most interested in Felisin's story but then got way more invested in the Chain of Dogs (which I found a bit boring at first) and Kalam's story. I didn't really like Mappo's and Icarium's part for the most part but that's probably just because I found them the hardest to follow and understand. 2 books in and I'd still be completely lost without the reading companions. The world is massive and there are some really good storylines, but it also requires massive effort; making it not exactly an ideal book to read after work or before sleeping. The last 200 pages pull the rating up from 3 stars to 3.75.

The first one was great, this one was even better. Maybe it’s because of having a better understanding of the world, but this one didn’t feel nearly as dense as the first. This sequel has so much great intrigue and suspense. The diversity of characters is perfect. Characters I loved, hated, was on the fence about and everything in between. This book also affected me much more emotionally than the first because of how well the characters and plots were written. If a book of fiction can pull on my heartstrings, get me happy or sad, because of its events and their consequences to characters, then I believe it’s an excellent book.
Erikson also does a great job of introducing many new ways magic is used and races of people, each with interesting histories and mysteries. And he also does a great job of showing that while magic is powerful it does have dangerous limitations.
It was so hard to put this book down and I’m so excited to start the next one!

Overall an okay read, but I thought the pacing was off throughout and I just ended up feeling bored with the story a lot of the time.
