The author does an exceptionally fine job of weaving together the political, strategic, operational and tactical elements of the Antietam campaign. He makes a good case for his argument that 1862 marked the moment when Union war aims became revolutionary (a distinction often reserved for 1863). His analysis of the struggle for power between Lincoln and McClellan is particularly well considered. I learned a lot from the book.

Fabulous account of the famous battle. Very well written. Not recommended to those who don't enjoy reading nitty gritty war books. Slotkin goes into great detail describing the intricacies of the battle.

Fascinating when it's on the politics and the scheming of General McClellan to affect his own end to the civil war by undermining Lincoln and compromising with the South. The battle descriptions are a long slog, however. I could have done with a lot less exposition about the movements of troops. The maps are unreadable in the Kindle edition.
