Didn’t really like Elizabeth or Darcy in this retelling. Darcy was a little gropey and Elizabeth was too mild-mannered and didn’t express herself.

After having watched the excellent BBC Pride and Prejudice series, I was craving more so I downloaded basically sanctioned fanfictions from the library (aka Pride and Prejudice variations). This one seemed interesting as a premise and credible with an introduction from a university professor and all. All in all, I am glad I did - this is one of the best AU stories that I have read.
I read a lot of fanfiction and Pride and Prejudice remains one of my favourites. But a lot of AU stories basically add sex to the stories or set it in modern times, which is fine but often lose the subtlety that Austen created. This one came closest and presented characters which were credible both in the milieu that the book was set in and for Austen’s canon. That, for me, is the highest praise I can give.
I am going to cheat and refer you to another review that basically captured all my thoughts (https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/849502182?book_show_action=false&from_review_page=1)
The book does slow a bit in the end without the drama of Lydia’s elopement. Austen knew how to add a dash of drama to her work which livened up the depictions of everyday life as it were. This book could have used that. However, as successful FANFICTON this is some of the best work I have read. In that context I am giving this five stars - four stars for the book's story, writing and 1 more for the craft behind bringing something to the classic.
