I was hooked from the beginning but once they figured out who the killer was it seemed to take too long to wrap everything up and catch him. I kind of lost interest near the end.

I've seen it happening one third it the book. My surprise was how bad the policemen were acting. I am not sure if that's how they actually do things in Denmark or the author is just portraying them in an unflattering posture. The whole background story with the personal lives of some of the detectives it's missing it's goal to connect the reader with the story teller. It just makes them weak, disorganized and a miracle they got in that position, job to begin with.

I was in the airport looking for a book that would occupy my time for 3 hours. The Tenant did just that.

Translated into English, this Dutch author sets up a dark mood that begins with a bizarre killing of a young woman, in which an intricate pattern of lines are carved into the victims face. As the story unfolds, those we think could be the killer in fact become victims. It kept the tension high as the detectives kept facing obstacles and more killings. Why these people, why the method of killing?

My only frustration was the continuous commentary of Inspector Korner's failed marriage. It didn't add to the story and the reader didn't need to hear about it more than a couple times to understand Korner's personal life.

Overall, it's a strong, fast paced story that provided tension and a strong climax. Looking forward to Ms. Engber's next novel.

The Tenant was a very interesting noir read. I picked it up from a sale bin at my local bookstore, drawn in mostly by the $3 price tag rather than an interest in the genre, and was pleasantly surprised. Set over the course of a 4 day murder investigation, the pace was slow but it suited the story itself. I did find myself guessing the murderer before it was revealed, but there were further twists that I didn’t anticipate at all and I enjoyed that. I’ll be keeping an eye out for the English translations of the other books in this series!

Story was good, well written all in all. I can't find a specific fault I didn't like other than it wasn't my cup of tea in a book. The ending felt like there was still some stuff that didn't get wrapped up in its fullest, but still acknowledged it so it wasn't bad.

Not the best translation and some casual misogyny about women's bodies.
