“The first step to building an antiracist America is acknowledging America’s racist past. By acknowledging America’s racist past, we can acknowledge America’s racist present.”

This book has prompted me to think hard and have so many conversations already. I believe it should be required reading; if you want to have an opinion on racism in America, it’s so important to know the history of racism in America (see quote above). I hope to one day incorporate this into our curriculum at school and to see my students develop an understanding of our country’s past and what systemic racism looks like. I love Jason Reynolds’ voice and way of writing— you don’t feel weighed down by facts and history. I highly highly recommend this book and want everyone to read it.

Such a fantastic non-history book (with tons of history I did not know). I listened to the audio book with my family, and it was top-notch. It felt like Jason was in the room talking to us. Highly recommend reading any version of this though!

I listened to the Audiobook read by Jason Reynolds; whom I would listen read the phone book because his voice is so magnificent.

There is so much American history that I have just now realized is completely whitewashed. There was so much I didn't know!

I thoroughly recommend this book for anyone looking for a quick glance into the decisions that shaped America into the land it is now. I'm looking forward to reading Ibram X. Kendi's verison of Stamped as I'm sure it goes into much fuller detail.

This book just became one of my favorites and should be read by all; a condensed informational book based on facts and truths which brings light on racism, how it still exists because of views/ideologies of so many have not changed since the founding of this country.

Jason Reynold’s narration made this a delight to listen to. I really enjoyed reading this (listening to it) immediately after Kendi’s Stamped. This “remix” reminded me of key events, people and arguments that I really wanted to internalize. I think it’s worth it to read them both.
