2016 has not started off with a lot of winners for me, unfortunately. This was one of those books that I didn't dislike, exactly, but I also didn't really enjoy it much either. I'm not sure if I know exactly why I found this to just be a solid "ok" but I do know that I found myself counting down the sections left in the audiobook until I could be done with it. Not the greatest endorsement.

I'm a big fan of memoirs and humorous essays based on people's lives. So maybe I went into this hoping for something similar to the other books in the genre I enjoy (a la Jenny Lawson or Augusten Burroughs or Amy Poehler). But this just felt...wrong? I'm not sure how to describe how I felt exactly. The entire book had a sort of "I don't care, whatever" sort of vibe to it which made me feel like I was wasting my time on this book. Maybe its because I grew up with people like Sloane (relatively well off, suburban raised, now NYC living) and I already knew how things were going to turn out (spoiler: nothing really bad ever happens, unless terrible jobs and crappy exes count). And none of the essays ever made me laugh or feel like she touched on anything really unique. Often, the essays felt like they were trying so hard to reach for something inspirational or connect two life changing moments together that it just fell flat. And the audiobook didn't help spark anything exciting either- sometimes authors reading their own books can really sell a story through their inflection but, again, I didn't really laugh at any of the parts.

Did I hate this? No. It wasn't the worst and I'm sure I know plenty of people who would find this fun. Did I love this? Also, no. Too much forced meaning into rather average life stories kept me from ever really digging the book above an "eh" level.

Sloane Crosley is quietly hilarious- you just really never see it coming. I read this book 8 years ago and I still pull it out and read it from time to time. It never gets old. And she's just such a magnificent writer. Seriously, if you want a good laugh- read this book.

An easy light read that took me out of myself. It's refreshing to read a voice so unlike my own. I'll pass this one on to my 20ish niece.

the only reason i finished this book was because i paid $6 for it at a used bookstore. i should have bought some fancy $6 piece of cake instead. it was like reading a blog that concerned itself with stuff you tell your friends on the phone or like guess what happened in my dream last night - kind of only interesting to you type stuff. too bad - where did my high expectations come from?

Another book of funny anecdotes. Easy to pick up and put down.

I bought this book for the title. Seriously. I enjoyed the stories but wasn't blown away. Really liked the bridesmaid story.
