I felt so detached from this. Not sure if it was because of the breaks in the writing, but unfortunately this semi coming of age story wasn’t enjoyable. A bit messy, confusing/interesting dynamic of the relationships. Spoiler…Edie didn’t really grow from her experiences until THE very end of the book.

Not sure how I feel about this one but I know I’m not very excited by it. It was really detached, cold, and way too metaphorical. Also, the run on sentences were literal marathons.

I read this book quickly, but not because I loved it, but because I wanted it to be over. I really enjoyed the style of writing, the beautiful run on sentences, observations, and descriptions of the main characters world. However, I did not like her, and not that you need to like a protagonist, but more-so that I did not care about her. I wanted to, I tried to, when I highlighted lines I would be pulled in more slightly to care for her, but then it would fall away again until I found another passage I enjoyed. She was boring, and maybe that was the point. I am not somebody who needs excessive dialogue in a book, however I felt that the lack of dialogue was somewhat unrealistic. I would definitely read another novel by Raven Leilani, and I can understand why others love this, however, this book was not for me at this time.

This book took me awhile to get though, and I don’t feel the story and ‘action’ really started until more than halfway through. You felt for the main character and I really loved the writing style.

For the author's first novel, she did a good job. I would love to see this story in a movie.
