Good book but is a depressing read because of the main character and the world that Camus has build for this story

This book has been described as many things by many people, many of which I have no idea what they mean and in all honesty I have no real desire to find out. For me this book is a chilling yet gripping account of a young man who feels nothing, and is so detached from his family, friends and even surroundings that he brings a strange and yet intriguing sense of clarity to the world around him. Events begin with the death of his mother, to which he responds how he feels is appropriate to him and yet the world labels him a monster (without knowing enough about either to judge). He falls into a comfortable romantic relationship and is carried by the tide of this again without the socially expected feelings that go with it, and yet he is contented to go with it. Then, he finds himself responding to an incident on an Algerian beach that leads to murder and his trial where all of this comes out and is judged more harshly than the actions that led him there. I loved the dry wit and dark observations made by Meursault throughout the book but particularly at his trial as the true injustice of the world is shown in full. This will bore some, enrage others but I just found this amusing and oddly familiar and I found a disturbing comfort in Meursault's view and approach.
