I love the love story in this. It’s such a cute romance! I see a lot of myself in Shirin so I kept rooting for her. The writing style made me feel like I was right there with her. These characters! I just wanted Ocean to just back off sometimes because I didn’t want to see Shirin go through what she went through. I’m not a Muslim or Persian myself so I won’t comment on those aspects of the novel. Despite that, I do appreciate that Shirin’s emotions were not cast to the side solely because of her religion. I have so many more thoughts but I don’t feel like typing an entire essay on this novel.

The love story (while fine initially) for me in the end - took away the power the story potentially had. Unless someone can explain it in a way that I’m maybe just not seeing clearly. A part of me understands why Shirin as a character is the way she is but another part of me sometimes didn’t like her or the way she framed certain situations when the other person clearly would have no idea how to react. Obviously the coach and Ocean’s mom are out of this world insane and pos but Ocean himself ? Eh - I think he was unintentionally looking for a safety net and found that in Shirin.
