Approaching this as a murder mystery is probably a mistake (the culprit, I believe, is very obvious), but approaching this as a character study of an eccentric, grieving, and isolated woman is the better move. There are themes of predetermination vs. self-determination, the struggles of feeling at place in a community, the power of friendship on the fringes of society, the morality surrounding humanity’s relationship with nature, plus a good deal of William Blake thrown in.

3.5 stars - If you love animals and astrology, you definitely need to read this. I was surprised at the ending surprise of whodunit, even tho I had some ideas. It’s a really unique murder mystery, a few times I wasn’t able to follow exactly what was happening. But overall this was really entertaining and not the average murder mystery, which was refreshing.

4.5 maybe? Super cute really enjoyed it

It crossed my mind that the thing that leaves the body sucks a piece of the world after it, and no matter how good or bad it was, how guilty or blameless it leaves behind a great big void.

The sun flees over there once it has seen enough of these atrocities.

Sometimes it’s as if I’m composed of nothing but symptoms of illness. I am a phantom built out of pain.

There are some people at whom one only has to glance for ones throat to tighten and one’s eyes to fill with tears of emotion. These people make one feel as if a stronger memory of our former innocence remains in them, like a freak of nature not entirely battered by the fall. Perhaps they are messengers like the servants who find a lost prince who is unaware of his origins, show him the robe he wore in his native country, and remind him how to return home.

The fact that we don’t know what’s going to happen in the future is a terrible mistake in the programming of the world. It should be fixed at the first opportunity.

People of my age, the places that they truly loved and to which they once belonged are no longer there. The places of their childhood and youth have ceased to exist. The villages where they went on holiday, the parks with uncomfortable benches where their first loves blossomed, the cities cafes and houses of their past. And if their outer form has been preserved it is all the more painful, like a shell with nothing inside it anymore. I have nowhere to return to. It’s like a state of imprisonment. The wall of the cell are the horizon of what I can see beyond them exists a world that’s alien to me and doesn’t belong to me. So, for people like me the only thing possible is here and now, for every future is doubtful. Everything yet to come is barely sketched and uncertain like a mirage that can be destroyed by the slightest twitch of the air.
