A really good Brubaker, Sean Phillips mixture of pulp, sci-fi, noir, and superheroes. Had a grand old time excited to read the next book

I have really been enjoying the team of Ed Brubaker & Sean Phillips when it comes to non-Gotham stories. Set in a 'super' universe, where you have both super-powered heroes & villains, Brubaker plays with the idea of a villain having to go into witness protection and slowly finding himself in the position of having to assist the heroes. What happens when the villain starts enjoying his work, helping others? And how does his old compatriots look to him when he has to return to the underworld? Could he just pick up where he left off, or has being a bit of a hero taken the shine off of doing evil?

At first, I wasn't convinced, but the plot picked up significantly in the second half.

The extent to which my experience of reading this book matched with its sales pitch was impressive. As advertised, this is a superhero noir: mystery, violence, twisty plot, superpowers, etc. My one caveat would be that, if you can't get past Brubaker's thing (Dark! Gritty! Not-Always-Subtly Misogynistic!), this is not a thing for you. Maybe read some Jeff Lemire, instead.

Holds up pretty well--good action and pacing. It's a great example of a noir story, whcih means I had major issues with the depictions of women.

AMAZING! One of my favourite graphic novels ever. What great art and great writing. Immediately went out and picked up everything else Ed Brubaker after this.

I can see what they were trying to do with this book but honestly it didn't work for me. The main character seemed too much like the standard anti-hero protag and it seemed like he was too close to standard archetype for me to get at all invested in him. Also, not at all fond of trying to create a "redeemable" character who is also a rapist. Also not at all fond of the way the woman he raped was treated. A woman who doesn't want to spend time with a guy who comes off as intensely bored with his whole life is not automatically a bitch.

I liked the twist in the second last issue though, so that bumped up the rating I was going to go with a little.

I think this is the first non-superhero comic I've ever read by Ed Brubaker. (Well, non-mainstream, if you insist on calling it a superhero comic.) And, it was pretty amazing. I love superheroes, but I also love turning the whole superhero genre on it's head. And I love it when an author can take a completely unlikely story, and write the characters as if they were real - and because they're reacting to things that we don't experience, their reactions aren't what we might expect - but they make sense. (Was that a run-on sentence, or what?)

And the art perfectly matches the tone of the book. Dark, and intense, and sometimes funny. (And definitely rated-R.)

Definitely worth picking up.

Pretty good. As always I like the art, story is interesting, and it kept me engaged. Pace was really well done and I enjoyed the entire ride, can't wait for the next one.
