SpoilerThe 2nd (so far) one of the books in this series where a "spiritualist" was the bad guy.

Maybe five in a relative row is too many and it's time to take a break OR maybe this is not a great offering. Definitely my least favorite of the Penny Parker books thus far. It feels a bit like a re-tread - another fraudulent medium and more casual racism against Asians! Also, Penny and her dad are kind of assholes when housekeeper Mrs. Weems inherits some dough. And while Mrs. Weems is pretty doltish about things, I choose to think that is just passive-aggressive behavior towards her employers for uttering (and believing) claptrap like "Oh, she'll never be happy when she's not taking care of us!" Also, Penny does other dumb stuff. Hopefully this was just Wirt having a bad day and/or on deadline for her actual journalist job and it got rushed through.

Not my favorite Penny Parker -- this one has a recycled plot element from the first book of the series, the housekeeper Mrs. Weems is more-than-usually dumb, and even Penny is rather dumb, at least when it comes to dealing with Mrs. Weems -- but there were still enough funny moments in between to make it worthwhile.

Beware the 1940s racism, this time against the Japanese, including a rather awful drawing for the frontispiece.
