At times a little self indulgent but as always, a master in his craft. A hard and honest look at poverty in America and the grey spaces of existing against modern society. I wish I could fish with Suttree.

Suttree essentially demands a reread. It’s a McCarthy through and through and is practically dripping with symbolism that’s nearly impossible to catch on the first read. I would consider it a spiritual predecessor to The Passenger as it has a similar narrative structure that consists of essentially no narrative structure.
My best description would be that it feels like a season of a show that you start watching halfway through - and then continue to skip around to random episodes. It evokes a very unstable feeling that I grew much more accustomed to as it continued.
