 I kind of can't explain why this book is so good. The writing is in that 'just okay' category that's a hair's breadth from being simplistic enough to annoy me. The story, on the surface at least, is a fun superhero adventure with a nothing special going on. But slowly and unexpectedly, it all builds to some impressive character development that has me definitely planning to read the rest of the series to see where it all goes from here.

This was fun to read and I’ll be going back for the sequels. Whilst the world-building left a little to be desired, it has strong characters and knew what kind of story it was telling from the jump. This sense of identity carried it through to its natural conclusion, and I trust that the sequels will continue to maintain the standard of writing.

 My only criticism is that there wasn’t enough emotion conveyed. The book ends with a massive twist but the author fails to pass on the shock and horror to the reader - we know what the characters are thinking but we don’t feel it too. This was an issue that plagued the book from start to finish, an inability to transport us into the hearts of the characters.
