Les petits secrets d'Emma by Sophie Kinsella

So I thought this book had a pretty cool concept. I mean, we all have little secrets, even if they're pretty insignificant to anyone else but us. So I could relate to that.

But unfortunately the main character, Emma, was one of those characters that absolutely infuriated me most of the time. Pretty much she's a complete moron.

It's weird because I actually do like chick flicks, and the majority of the time women in those are pretty shallow and stupid. But for some reason I think that kind of character just translates better to screen than they do on the page.

I don't mind that Emma keeps secrets from people, it's human nature. Everyone does it because of many reasons: we don't want to hurt people's feelings, we are embarrassed by something, etc. Whatever the reason, it's something that's pretty relatable. It was everything else about Emma that that was unrelatable to me, and sometimes downright annoying.

Probably the thing I liked the least was how immature she acted at work. She feels so entitled to getting a promotion (from marketing assistant to marketing executive) that she literally begs her boss for a promotion like a kid begging for a toy or a piece of candy. When he says she's not ready she throws a hissy fit and promises that she will work really hard and that she deserves it and blah-blah-blah. Yet, a few pages later she talks about all the ways that she avoids actually doing work while at work. Also, whenever she's asked to do something she complains about it. She doesn't even believe that market research is necessary within the marketing department. Really? Do you even realize what your department does?

It's things like this that really turned me off to Emma, and since she's the main character on every page, that in turn made it very difficult to like this book.

Oh, and could she say "Er" any more often? Every other sentence she says she begins with "Er". Is she really saying that? Do people even really say that? So annoying. And while we're on dialog, nearly every sentence ended in an exclamation point. Nearly every one! It was like everyone was yelling all the time. They were WAY overused in this book.

Perhaps I'm just not a chick lit fan. I don't know. This was really only the second chick lit book I've read, and the first one was alright (better than this one) but still not my favorite. I'm not sure, maybe I'll try another book from the genre in the future (probably not anytime soon). But, I'm pretty sure I won't be trying any other Kinsella books.

This has to be one of the most hilarious but boring and frustrating books I've ever read. It was so funny at first but everything went downhill the last few chapters.

This is a story about a young woman who wants success with her job. She wants a promotion, and she wants love with someone she can connect with. It has funny moments. I’m not sure I like the idea of her giving Jack another chance in the end because of what he did. I’m not sure his actions are forgivable, especially so easily. 😬 I don’t think the Emma should have dated Jack after that, at least, not so soon. Other than that, the story was enjoyable. It was a nice Rom-Com. 👍🏼👍🏼

Quite entertaining but a bit slow in the beginning. Also, I would have liked to read more of Jack and his interactions with Emma.
