Harrington set out to write this account of divorce because it was amicable: they still cohabit together after ending their marriage. She found most memoirs on divorce are vicious and cruel, accounting only the pain of the dissolve. Instead, she focuses on our societal expectations in marriage, parenting and divorce- reflecting on her own through a humorous and poignant lens.

Don’t write this book off if you aren’t married: anyone who’s had a long term relationship will see things reflected here brilliantly. I liked Harrington’s writing style and her raw honesty about her marriage. She did not shy away from her own failings and cast blame on others, she owns her mistakes.

The only reason this isn’t a 5 star rating from me is because it felt a little disjointed due to the essay instead of traditional memoir format. I wanted some timeline pieces flushed out more and the flow wasn’t exactly seamless. Also many of her humorous essays were hilarious but a few felt forced to me. But I do think this book is important-I’ll be ruminating on this one for some time.
