It took me a couple chapters to get into the groove of how this was written, but it was so dark and twisted. This author is not afraid to make things brutal. I will be continuing the series.

Enjoyed this book but I did guess the killer from quite early on. Maybe I have read too many crime novels but I find myself thinking about the characters already introduced in the story, and figuring it must be one of those. In this case I was right as this person made sense from quite early on

This was a Re-Read for me.
The first time I read this book was 5 to 6 years ago and I recall really liking it. It was one of the first thrillers I ever read.

The second time didn't went that well.

This was SO terrible. I read a lot of thrillers/mysteries and this was the worst I've read in a while. I thought I'd predicted who did it 100 pages in and hoped I was wrong - I wasn't. If the predictable plot wasn't bad enough the writing was painful to push thru. It was overwritten, soapy, and didn't flow well.

My love for psychological thrillers was sparked again as soon as I started reading this novel.

It was fast-paced, gripping, gruesome and not for the faint of heart. I loved every single page of it and I read and read and read until I was finished with this book. And even then I couldn't stop as I knew that there were sequels and I had to start that one as well until I fell asleep from exhaustion.

Smoky Barrett's life is in shatters and I think there is no one that wants to trade places with her. Although terrible things happened to her and her family and she falls into a pit of despair, depression and the wish to just stop existing, to stop this excruciating pain and the thoughts she has forever, she is strong and tough and resilient.

The characters were all interesting and different and versatile and I hope that they will go more in-depth as the series progresses. I'm especially interested in Bonnie and her relationship with Smoky.

This series starts out quite strong and violent and I'm excited to see how this will be (or won't be) topped in the books to come.

The writing was captivating, the story violent and relentless and I missed that kind of rush of reading something that had me on my toes throughout the whole story.

There were things about the story and also about Smoky that just seemed too perfect, that fit too neatly into the puzzle and that bugged me a bit. But overall, I was a big fan of the story, of the characters and their relationships and the writing.
