A stark and honest contemplation of life in occupied Gaza, a part of Palestine that is sometimes excluded from the larger narrative.

The contributors of this collection are academics, intellectuals, and researchers laying out an argument against colonization and occupation. They give us no reason to look away.

A bit more academic than I thought it would be, but a necessary and informative book.

Since the publication of this book in 2022, contributor Refaat Alareer was killed by an Israeli airstrike in December 2023. He wrote the poem you may have seen, "If I Must Die."

Contributor Mosab Aubu Toha was arrested in November 2023 while trying to cross into Egypt with his family. He was released three days later after international pressure.

Contributor Israa Jamal was still trying to leave Gaza with her family as of May 10, 2024, when yet another Israeli strike in Rafa required them to evacuate to a different area. I am unsure if they made it.

Other writers from this collection are still alive and writing about Gaza, but I couldn't find current information for all of them. I hope they are safe.

If you would like to know more about Gaza, to read Palestinian voices discussing the struggles and hopes they have for their homeland, this book is worth the read. (As of right now, Haymarket Books has the ebook version for free on their site.) It's a mix of academic writing, personal essay, poetry, and photographs that cover a wide range of subjects while still making it clear that the occupation needs to end. I admit to glazing over a bit in the AI chapter, and sometimes the academic portions were not exactly clicking with me, but that's a Me problem. Overall, very glad to have read this, and I learned a lot.

Ceasefire now. Free Palestine.

A fantastic anthology to start understanding the history of Gaza and Palestine, I only knew a little bit about it's history before reading this book and everything was clear and educational. Some of these writings are heartbreaking but others are truly hopeful and inspiring. We need to continue to educate ourselves on what is happening in Gaza and support the Palestinians who are suffering under Israel's occupation and from the Nakba. Keep putting pressure on the occupiers to stop oppressing the occupied and to instead find a solution.

This collection brings together essays and poetry by Palestinian authors about Palestine. It provides nuanced and scholarly views on Palestine’s past, present and future, in a variety of different domains: agriculture, social media, architecture, ethics, artificial intelligence, education, politics of course, etc. Some essays are more autobiographical, describing in simple words what it’s like to live in Gaza and what it has been especially since the creation of the state of Israel in 1948. The poems bring together all those issues in direct, heartfelt lines.
I thought this was an accessible, well-researched and important book. The publisher is offering the ebook for free and I highly recommend it for a portrait of Gazan society very different from what Western media is used to showing its viewers.
This book was published in 2022, with most of the pieces written in 2021, so it doesn’t take into account the horrific events we are witnessing. However it provides context for the colonial violence and genoc!de perpetrated by Israel, and looks at possible futures for Gaza depending on the reactions of the international community. It is both a love letter to Palestinian culture and resilience, and a plea for help.
