I read this in just two days while we had no wifi and were trying to conserve cellular. It was a wonderful break from the more heavy, classical or nonfiction reading I’ve been doing.

Brilliant. OMG. What a beautiful book. Gathering Darkness, told from so many POVs was amazing. I loved every bit of it. So beautiful, yet sad, and the more I read, the better it got, and the more I wanted to read, I just hungered for more.

Honestly, the potential of this series went downhill fast on a speeding train.

This was waaaaay better than the first two novels. It was slightly boring at the very beginning. Sometimes I was at a point where I would dnf it all together.
But after 40% it started to really get interesting. I am glad that I'd stick around.

Her cerulean eyes widened. “You dream about me?”

His gaze snapped back to hers. “Nightmares only.”
He wished they were only nightmares.

Wowowowow.
At this point, I don't even feel bad for not caring all that much about Lucia and Jonas.

And in this moment, he thought she was the bravest and most beautiful girl he’d ever known.

Ashur!! Nic!!

Why, Amara?

This series is soooo good. I am seriously hooked.

So the reviews of this series seem to be very extreme, people either love it or hate it. Personally, I love it, but I can understand why people would be disappointed. If you're used to reading ADULT fantasy or EPIC/HIGH fantasy, then this book may be underwhelming for you.

I read a mixture of adult and young adult fantasy, and the differences between the two are very stark. This series is clearly in the young adult genre. While it has a lot of the mature tropes that Game of Thrones has (possible incest, many murders, political games etc), the whole tone of the book and the characters are much more juvenile. For one, the book focuses on teenagers and there are far fewer main characters than in Game of Thrones (or other adult fantasy series). Because of this, the world feels much smaller and the romance and politics is much more immature.

I'm not saying this is necessarily a bad thing. Personally, I can appreciate the lighter nature of this series, but I can see how it could be disappointing for someone expecting a Game-of-Thrones-style book. So, my main advice to people thinking about this series is to go into it knowing it is a young adult series.

It took until about 75% through the book but things finally got interesting. The plot took unexpected turns and was exciting. For once I can't wait to start the next book. I'm glad the series is finally starting to be worth the read!
