This is one of those rare books where I was in a hurry to finish, not because I didn’t like it, but because I was dying to find out what was happening in this mysterious house. I was afraid I would groan at the end, but I actually liked it. I thought it was well written with a lot of tense moments. What more can you ask for? 5 stars!

The Dinner Guests by Kiersten Modglin is a quick read. The plot uses several common devices. The narration is point-of-view that passes between three women who have been lifelong friends and now live on the same cul-de-sac in a small town. The setting is the house at the end of the street where the characters find themselves locked in a struggle against their past. The action is a series of short bursts of dialogue that "pushes" the novel into the next chapter where the point-of-view changes, again. This type of "locked room" whodunit is typically my jam. However, the author billed as the "Queen of Twists" (from the back cover of the book, not my words) didn't provide a single "twist" that I didn't see coming 30-40 pages ahead of time. I was so excited for this book, but the only thing I really enjoyed was how quickly I read it.

Another Modglin win for me. I’m a sucker for a good trapped-in-a-creepy-house trope and this one did not disappoint.

This book was a fast read for me. It was just okay. It wasn’t a mind blowing story. I liked the escape room aspect of the story but it could have been done a lot better. There were some eye roll moments for me, like Tyler surviving ODing, being pushed into a hard fall (where he was suspected of being dead) AND being tossed into the river in the same night.

This book is a locked room mystery, which is one of my favorites, but the ending and ways that the author “resolves” all the loose ends is just dishonest and lazy. Plus the characters were unlikeable but not because they were complex and human. It was as deep as a Christopher Pike novel from the 90s., except I still like those for their nostalgia.
