I really enjoyed this poetry book. I have personally struggled with moderate to severe depression for years and I felt very seen by some of these poems.

I discovered Sabrina Benaim through her spoken poetry and I am so glad I got this book so I could read the full collection because she’s so talented! If you haven’t heard her do the spoken word, definitely look it up!

Some of my favorites include from this book include:

• explaining my depression to my mother      a conversation

• the loneliest sweet potato

• avowal

• feed a fever, starve a cold

• follow-up a prayer / a spell

I really enjoyed explaining my depression to my mother a conversation; so, I’m talking to depression…; on platonic love being a real thing; the parallel of (i) (ii) and avowal; and seven small ways in which i loved myself this week. There were also tons of lovely lines sprinkled throughout. I will say that the run-on sentences made it hard for me to keep focused, and I didn’t like all the lamenting over a boy.

This is a great book for young girls going through a breakup. I am not a young girl going through a breakup, so it's really not my vibe. I love concrete imagery in poetry, and Benaim's poems lack that; however, there was some imagery in the abstract that I was able to resonate with. It felt very... telling, not showing. Overall, it was fine, and not the worst poetry book I've read this year.

First heard the Spoken Word Poem "Explaining My Depression to My Mother," and loved it. I even teach it. I also enjoyed "girl behind you," "feed a fever, starve a cold," "a plain truth," "how to fold a memory," and "so my friend tells me she identifies as a mermaid." Great collection on anxiety and depression
