As someone who has spent time in both Israel and the Occupied Territories, Sacco's work is true to the complexity, injustice and intractability of what is still happening there today.

His character is honest in their often lack of awareness and the gradual insensitivity to the brutality of the stories they hear.

The splash pages are amazing in their realistic detail and sense of life they hold.

I've finally read this one after it being recommended to me as one of the best "serious" graphic novel (as in, non-fiction).
Very successful in telling the stories of Palestinians in the occupied territories. The pages are often overwhelming, better than photos.

Sacco’s self-deprecating humour makes it feel like you’re hearing the story from a close friend over drinks. An unforgettable experience.

The most depressing graphic novel I've ever read. Joe Sacco chronicles time that he spent in Palestinian towns and refugee camps and presents their perspective on the Israeli occupation. The stories that these people tell are full of IDF brutality, economic chokeholds, and a determined process of dehumanization at the hands of an occupying force. Sacco acknowledges at the end of the book how it lacks the "Israeli side" of the story, but he contends that the Israeli story is the one that he was raised with, which is why he made the journey in the first place: to see, hear, and feel the Palestinian experience that mostly eludes international awareness. The black-and-white drawings are pointedly detailed, while the dialogue between Sacco and the Palestinians offers a variety of opinions and experiences that we simply don't hear. Hard to read for its subject matter, but brilliantly executed.

Informative and honest about a really difficult topic - I feel like I learnt a lot, my only complaint was that the writer himself was very much front and centre which in many places made sense, but in other places seemed in conflict with the main message.
