You know what you’re getting with this book. Here are the intriguing parts, spoiler free:
- this, like, says things about society. they really spent a lot of this book talking about the holocaust actually and i just don’t think it needed to do that. with that, i know the novel is called devolution. but i’d didn’t like how much they talked about it
-the alpha sasquatch was characterized as a girlboss. all the other sasquatches were characterized according to what downton abbey character the narrator thought they were most like
- squatch smashes a tesla
- an ipad is sort of an important character
- nathan fillion narrates part of the audiobook
- i’m reeling from the epilogue
The first half of the book is sooo slow um but beyond that like it really is the book it promised it would be. And I chose to use my limited focus to start and complete the audiobook. which ultimately does says things about society checkmate

Very much a Max Brooks book, with all that implies: a story made up of interview transcripts and diary entries, a focus on how modern technology interacts with the natural world, disdain for Silicon Valley tech people and urban arrogance, obsession with Zulu spears, and discussions of Israel's political situation. The only difference between Devolution and World War Z (which in my opinion is the greatest zombie book of all time), is that the latter forced Brooks to go broad and talk about different people around the world. Here, he went small and did a lot of soapboxing. I may have agreed with most of what he said, but it definitely made this book a lot weaker.

I love monster stories, always have.  There's something about cryptids that fascinate me, so I'm always interested in reading books centering around one or another. And I got that here with Sasquatch!

I thoroughly enjoyed this story as a whole but found the characters (aside from Mostar) to be so frustrating and pretty unlikeable.

This is told similarly to WWZ.  There's journal entries, interviews and articles, and honestly, I absolutely love this form of writing.  It made the story come to life!
