SpoilerWhat i liked: the normalacy of a poly partnership and queer characters without that being what the story is about. Its as significant as somebody having brown hair.
What i didn't like: i thought this would be a fantasy story but its more just normal life with metaphorical terminology labels. I also didnt really enjoy the simple everything wrapped up neatly and perfectly ending or the not so subtle christian undertones.

As nervous as I was about it being a children’s book, I didn’t need to be. This book was breathtaking. The queer and disability rep were lovely. The way that this book tackled tough topics in a way that was palatable for young audiences was spectacular. I’ve never read anything like this and I wish I had. I really wish I’d had something like this available to me as a kid. If you haven’t read it, give it a try. Especially if you have kids and think it would be a good book for them.

I feel like the main reason this isn't 5 stars is that it is YA and clearly written for a younger audience. There were lots of moments where the characters are clearly conveying the theme that were heavy handed but also this is for kids, they'll need it told to them directly. The message is good through and I only recently learned this book is being taught in schools, which is wonderful.

Otherwise Akwaeke Emezi has the most beautiful contemporary prose, they are absolutely one of the best writers around. Their dialogue also does an excellent job of making the characters feel real. And finally they like freak shit and there were some good moments, the descriptions of Pet and Pet coming out of the painting and what Pet does to the monster at the end 👌
